BANGLA CINEMA- TOLLYWOOD

In 1897, films were shown for the first time in AMADER KOLKATA SHOHOR. Couple of years later, Hiralal Sen from north Calcutta started making films at the Classic Theatres. In 1901, Hiralal Sen set up Royal Bioscope, produced scenes and dance sequences from popular Bengali plays. At Calcutta's Star Theatres, Amritlal Bose screened a package of 'actualities' and 'fakes' along with plays and variety shows. Back in those days, bioscope was an added attraction to popular theatres. In 1898, the multinational Warwick Trading Co. had commissioned 'Panaroma of Calcutta' newsreel. In 1917, Raja Harishchandra, the first feature film in India was made by Dadasaheb Phalke. The first Bengali movie was "Billwamangal" in 1919 which happened to be a silent movie. Bankim Chandra Chatterjee was a popular Bengali novelist whose several works were adapted into films, such as, Durgeshnandini, Krishnakanter Will etc. The first popular hero in Bengali film was probably Pramathesh Barua, who was a director himself too. Debaki Bose, Pramathesh Barua gave a new dimension to Indian cinema. Debaki Bose directed Chandidas in 1932; this film is noted for its breakthrough in recording sound. Sound recordist Mukul Bose found out solution to the problem of spacing out dialogue and frequency modulation.
The first Bengali talkie, Dena Paona was released in 1931, directed by Premankur Atarthi and produced by New Theatres. Famous musician Rai Chand Boral composed music for this movie. In 1935, P.C.Barua directed and acted in Saratchandra Chatterjee's popular novel Devdas and this film became a phenomenon in the industry. Bimal Roy directed the Hindi version of the same in 1955. Kanan Devi was the first star actress in the domain if Bengali cinema. The movie, Rajat Jayanti, a popular Bengali comedy probably was the first of its kind. The movie was directed by P.C. Barua starring himself and Pahari Sanyal. Another historical film was 'Biyallis(42)' based on Quit India movement of 1942. The film was banned for political reason. Bikash Roy's performance in this movie is memorable. Also there was a group of talented actors such as Chhabi Biswas, Bikash Roy, Pahari Sanyal, Basanta Choudhury. And there never was any shortage of good stories, as Bengali literature in 21st century was rich with elements all the time. This was accompanied by the musical talents of Bengal. Bengal produced a good flow of film directors, a few to mention - Devaki Basu, Nitin Basu, Ajay Kar, Rajen Tarafdar, Bimal Roy, Tapan Sinha, Saroj Dey, Tarun Mazumder etc. who continuously produced fine quality movies. Some of them moved to Mumbai(Bombay) and made reamrakable contribution to Hindi films.
The real stardom in Bengali films started when films starring Uttamkumar and Suchitra Sen gained extreme popularity. This romantic combination brought golden age of commercial Bengali cinema and the duo acted in a series of box office successes like, Sare Chuattor, Saptapadi, Sapmochan, Harano Sur, Pathe Holo Deri etc. Uttamkumar acted with other heroines such as Supriya, Sabitri, Madhabi, Aparna and others. Suchitra Sen received best actress award in Moscow Film Festival for her role in Saat Paake Badha co-starring Saumitra Chatterjee.

SALT LAKE

Once a swampy stretch of land on the eastern fringe of Calcutta, now the dreamland of many a hearts ……. such is the name ------- "Salt Lake City", not to be confused with another city with the same name on the other part of the globe in United States. Modernisation, self-sufficiency with lush greeneries, chirping of birds along with a gale of fresh air defines this posh, hi-fi city. The tremendous pressure of accommodating the ever-increasing population in the city of Calcutta contributed to the emergence of this dreamland. The then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy came up with the idea of satellite townships. Salt Lake City was one of them.Bhabanath Sen, a Bengali landlord had taken the present Salt Lake area on lease from 1869 to 1956. By May 19th 1956, the Government had taken over and then gradually Salt Lake started taking shape. A Yugoslav firm was entrusted with the reclamation work of the water-filled area. Five-mile long pipes were laid down from Ghushuri to Salt Lake for sand filling. It took not less than 7 years to fill up the 15 sq. km. of land with sand water, which was a very fertile fishing zone. Once a water land, turned to be a sandy area. And on 16th of April, 1962 the Salt Lake City was born.Initially this planned city was under the South Dum Dum Municipality, then it came under the wings of Urban Development Department of West Bengal and subsequently in 1989, Notified Area Authority was set up. Ultimately 1992 onwards, Salt Lake has come under the wings of the Municipality Authority.By 1965, Sector-I was complete and by 1969, Sector-II and Sector-III even were ready for occupancy. Then came up the Industrial Sectors ----- IV and V. The 12.52 sq. km. area of the dream city initially comprised of 12873 plots of land apart from 87 housing estates and blocks. The land area has almost doubled now with the inclusion of Duttabad, Sukantanagar, Nayapatti and Mahishbathan. Today Salt Lake is the best residential area in amader kolkata shohor.

KOLKATAR GAAN KOLKATAR PRAAN

A style of modern bengali song which brought a new era of popular bengali songs. After Suman and Nachiketa, bands like Mohiner Ghoraguli, Chandrabindoo, Bhoomi, Cactus, Paraspathor, Lakkhichara, Fossils and so on, have again attracted bengali audience to listen and like bengali numbers. Different bands follow different styles which range from bengali vatiali to lokgiti, from pop to rock and from smooth jazz to country. Nowadays, in every "para", neighborhood in Bengali,in kolkata there is atleast one upcoming band comprising of youngsters. Among the bands the most cerebral is perhaps the Chandrobindoo while I myself is also an ardent fan of Fossils for their rock music.MANY PEOPLE WHEN TOLD OF BENGALI MUSIC GET A DISGUSTED LOOK ON THRIR FACES. THREY ARE FOOLS. THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE BEAUTY OF BENGALI MUSIC. KOLKATA IS VERY FAMOUS ALL OVER INDIA FOR ITS BENGALI MUSIC. BANDS AS WELL AS INDIVIDUAL SINGERS ARE FLOURISHING IN THE CITY. BANDS LIKE FOSSILS, CACTUS, CHANDRABINDOO AND BHOOMI ARE MORE PROMINENT BUT INDIVIDUAL SINGERS LIKE NACHIKETA, ANJAN DUTTA AND LOPAMUDRA ARE NOT FAR BEHIND. BELOW GIVEN ARE BRIEF DESCPRIPTIONS OF SOME BANDS:

FOSSILS
Fossils is the pioneer in "Rock" genere in the circuit of Bangla Band. They proved others wrong & showed "Banglaye rock hoy".Members--Bubun ( Drums and Percussions ), Chandra ( Bass Guitar, Backing Vocal ),Deep ( Guitar, Backing Vocal ),Partha ( Guitar & Backing Vocal ) and Rupam (Lead Vocalist, Song Writer and Composer)FOSSILS IS ONE of the most popular Bangla rock bands in India. Their music is a blend of blues, hard rock and alternative music. It has four albums under its name. It makes original compositions and has a large fan following.Fossils was once asked to get off stage to make way for better-known bands. Today it is considered one of the most original rock bands in India.Fossils is the first bengali band who have tried to bring the whole rock concept in the bangla band songs.Fossils -The Chakrabuho will encircle your senses till u reach the last step to Nemesis. Jara bangla band er gaan shone tader kache notun kore kichu bolar nei fossils er sommonde, r jara shone na tader ke bolo kholo nijeder kaan aar shono fossils er gaan........ JOY ROCK, JOY FOSSILS

CHANDRABINDOO
Chandrabindoo is one of leading bangla Bands in amader kolkata shohor ..The coolest bandla band ..melody and funny lyric that's the USP of Chandrabindoo. For them who favour and savour those great numbers by chandrabindoo.Ya,that modern touch with great middle-class sentiment, some satire, some humour. Not for the post modern "night-bright" guyz who are just the consumers of corporated food, music and clubs. So if you are a chandrabindoo fan you should be CHANDRABINDAAS, two steps ahead of being just bindaas.

CACTUS

► CACTUS : Sidhhartha(Vocals), Sanjay(Guitars), Sandip(Bass), Sudipto(Keys), Sibaji(Drums), Sayak(Vocals)

► Cactus was formed in 1992

► First performed on 6th March,1993

► In 1999 their self titled debut album was released from HMV

► In 2003 in Bengali movie titled NIL NIRJONE & Cactus composed and performed all the songs in the movie along with a bit of acting.

► In 2004 their second album was released from Asha Audio titled 'Rajar Raja'

► Their third album is supposed to release in early 2007

► Now they are back to Kolkata after rocking the US crowd

A desert exists all around us and even within us. Possibilities of survival 0%. Hence CACTUS

BHOOMI
The bangla band bhoomi rocks.Bhoomi is one of the leading bangla bands from Kolkata, with a different style of music.Folk song with urban style, sweet melody and too much experimental in sound ---This is Bhoomi for you. This band 1st became famous with "Barandaye Roddur" then "kapal", "chokhar deshe" and "pocha kaka" were other great hits. Today Bhoomi is one of the best, if not the best, bands in amader kolkata shohor.

LAKHHICHARA

Lakkhichhara..is a proper bangla ROCK band based in kolkata..they started off pretty young..they are awsome at live shows.they sound distinct and its always a treat to listen to them.
They are everywhere, every street knows them, every single schoolgirl has their fragrance inside her heart, every festival celebrates their spirit and everyone calls them - Lakkhichhara! Yes, that's what they are - simple, honest, fun-loving vagabonds of the City of Kolkata. A little crazy about life, sometimes ironically sad and sincere, determined to burn all their guts for music. Completely unware of the routine life, these are a bunch of freewheelin' rock-a-rollers (handpicked and handcrafted!!) with an uncontrollable tendency to perform eerie experiments through music and words. Recklessly robust and sensationally unbranded in texture, smells green, looks natural and tastes - HOT ....

BAND HISTORY

Some people say "Morning shows the day" … it's not always true, but when it comes to Lakkhichhara… it surely is. Back in the 90's, nurtured by the visions of the revolutionary music composer/singer/song writer/performer/film maker Late Mr. Gautam Chattopadhyay, a group of schoolkids that included his own son Gaurab Chatterjee on Drums along with some of his friends (ex members include Sayak, Parambrata, Abhishek, Samya, Riju, CG, Shomi) found music as their only form of expression. Being the youngest band to cut a single, Lakkhichhara recorded their first song "Porashonay Jolanjoli …" written by Goutam Chattopadhyay himself, which appeared on the ground breaking album 'Abar Bochhor Kuri Pore' - Mohiner Ghoraguli Shompadito Bangla Gaan. (Asha Audio ). Many a year passed, kids grew up to youngsters, few of them chose their own roads, the rest emerged in the professional circuit as Lakkhichhara !! That was the year 1999, the guys started doing music professionally in college fests, small gigs in hotels, pubs etc. During these times the band's noteworthy achievements were - the "Biswa Banga Sammellan performance & their involvement in a Television Serial - 'Swaponil'. Debaditya & Nilanjan ( both ex- Astra) joined the band in 2000, taking care of keyboards & guitars respectively. Year 2001 saw Lakkhichhara's debut album 'Megha Malhar' (Asha Audio,2001), the lineup was Sayak Bandopadhyay - Vocals, Nilanjan Mukherjee - Guitars & Backing Vocals, Sanket Bhattacharya - Bass, Debaditya Choudhury - Keyboards, Gaurab Chatterjee - Drums, Vocals & Backing Vocals with Anyrvan joining the band as the songwriter. Though not a hugely commercial success, the album featured some major hits like 'Care Korina', 'Shudhu Chai Tomay', being regularly aired on the FM channels. Besides, 'Megha Malhar' & 'Mohabishwo' won the hearts of critics. The Band also performed in 'Banga Sanskriti Utsav' that year … every thing was good till December 2001, when the vocalist Sayak Bandopadhyay left the Band.As we all know - 'Life goes on'… so it did…Subhajit Mukherjee joined Lakkhichhara as lead vocalist/ guitarist (Subhajit - Vocals, Nilanjan - Guitars & Backing Vocals, Sanket - Bass, Debaditya - Keyboards, Gaurab- Drums, Percussion, Vocals & Backing Vocals, Anyrvan - Lyrics) the guys kept rolling down newfound road …followed by concerts, interviews and a dream to touch the sky. Lakkhichhara performed in 12 Down Inn Street, Peerless Inn - being the first bangla band to play live. The title track stormed off the music scene with no leaf unturned. Within a month it turned out to be 'The Anthem of the Youth'. The song boasted of it's popularity at number 1 for months on the radio charts, bringing more shows, fans and above all - RECOGNITION! The album not only confirmed the band's position in the 'most popular' category, but also showcased their versatility. The romanticism of 'Mone Porchhe Na', the valor of 'Lakkhichhara', the melancholy of 'Shatsho Shokaal', the luster of 'Ballerina' proved their skills as matured songmakers. Flooded with invitations & interviews from the Radio & Television Channels, the band was on the peak of grandeur. The album's commercial success made Lakkhichhara a house hold name. The same year the guys performed at 'Trincas' - being the first band to appear live. …AND ONE MORE LOST SOUL FOR THE ROAD…2004 brought a new axeman to Lakkhichhara - Rishabh Ray - and the band was ready to roll. Relentless touring, college fests, charity shows & invitations kept the band with not even a minute to sit back, Finally in 2005, Lakkhichhara managed to cut some fresh material to record their third album 'Eka' (Asha Audio, 2005). Packed with a variety of tunes, 'Eka' strongly boasts to be their best work till date. The urban groovy 'Paliye Berai', 'Ami Raaji', 'Ke Ki Boley', reflected the helplessness of the modern psyche, the blasphemous 'Eka', 'Proshno', 'Boba Festun' or the bitter sweet dodgy romantic ballads like 'Phirey Esho', 'Jani-na Ki' surely made their way straight into the young hearts of the city. The band even anchored a popular weekend game show 'Chhakka Noile Fakka' on Akash Bangla which was eventually a big success. The members have also appeared as judges on 'Hau Mau Khau' - a game show on Zee Bangla TV, Band-E-Mataram (I & II), "Rock Idols" along with numerous college fests.

KOLKATTANS OR 'KOOL'KATTANS

I AM ALWAYS AT A LOSS OF WORDS WHEN I BEGIN TO PEN MY THOUGHTS ON KOLKATTANS. I AM ALSO A BIT CONFUSED. I CANT DECIDE WHETHER TO CALL THEM KOLKATTANS OR 'KOOL'KATTANS. ALL KOLKATTANS ARE KOOLKATTANS. I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU AND I AM 100% SURE YOUR ANSWER WILL BE WRONG. WHO IS A KOLKATTAN? YOU WILL SAY A KOLKATTAN IS A PERSON STAYING IN KOLKATTA. YOU ARE WRONG. A KOLKATTANS ARE NOT ONLY THOSE PEOPLE STAYING IN KOLKATA BUT EVERY PERSON WHO IS EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED TO AMADER KOLKATA SHOHOR, IRRESPECTIVE OF THE FACT WHETHER STAYING OR NOT STAYING IN KOLKATA. A CENSUS IN 1991 PROVED THAT BENGALIS ARE THE MOT INTELLIGENT COMMUNITY OF INDIA. THAT IS A REAL CREDITABLE FACT. JIYO BANGLA. ACCORDING TO ME A KOLKATTAN IS NOT ONLY INTELLIGENT BUT WISE AS WELL. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING INTELLIGENT AN BEING WISE. BOTH INTELLIGENT POEPLE AND WISE PEOPLE HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE BUT THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT A WISE MAN KNOWS TO USE HIS KNOWLEDGE AT THE RIGHT TIME. A KOLKATTAN KNOWS HOW TO GET TO GARIA FROM BARASAT EVEN WHEN IN THE BIGGEST PROBLEM. A KOLKATTAN KNOWS HOW TO GET THROUGH FROM IN FRONT OF SALT LAKE STADIUM EVEN JUST AFTER A EAST BENGAL V/S MOHAN BAGAN MATCH HAS JUST BROKEN OFF. ONLY A KOLKATTAN KNOWS HOW TO EAT A STOMACH-FILLING MEAL AT ONLY 15 RUPEES. ONLY A KOLKATTAN KNOWS HOW TO GET TO PARK STREET FROM ULTADANGA EVEN IF BYPASS IS COMPLETELY JAM PACKED. ONLY A KOLKATTAN KNOWS THE ACTUAL TREASURE OF AMADER KOLKATA SHOHOR. IT IS A TRUE FACT THAT KOLKATA IS THE CITY, IN INDIA, WHICH HOLDS THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF RELIGIONS FOLLOWED BY PEOPLE. THIS SHOWS THAT NO MATTER WHICH RELIGION PEOPLE BELONG TO THEY STILL UNITE UNDER ONE NAME, " KOLKATTAN". A VERY UNIQUE FEATURE OF KOLKATTANS IS COMMENTRY. THEY HAVE AN OPINION ON EVERYTHING. THEY JUST NEED A TOPIC AND CAN GO ON FOR HOURS AND HOURS. RIGHT FROM CRICKET TEAM SELECTION AND POLITICS TO MOVIES AND ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING WHICH IS AVAILABLE. U CAN SEE HOW MUCH TIME I HAVE GONE ON FOR. THIS SHOWS I AM A KOLKATTAN AND I AM PROUD TO BE A KOLKATTAN OF AMADER KOLKATA SHOHOR.

THE MOST UNIQUE FEATURE IN KOLKATA- BANDHS

NANDIGRAM CRISES

Kolkata/Nandigram, March 14 (IANS) At least 14 people were killed and 39 injured in Nandigram in West Bengal Wednesday as police opened fire to quell mobs and retake the area they lost control of in January after unrest over acquisition of farmland for industry. A minister called it a 'Black Day' for West Bengal.
In a day of violence not seen since the Left Front took power in the state three decades ago, the police resorted to firing as hundreds of furious villagers set upon the men in uniform determined to prevent their land from being seized.

AGAIN DUE TO THE NANDIGRAM CRISES SUCCESIVE BANDHS HAVE IN BEEN DECLARED IN AMADER KOLKATA SHOHOR. WAT IS THE USE OF ALL THESE BANDHS? ECONOMIC PROGRESS JUSTS HAULTS AND NOTHING ELSE. MANY DIFFERENT PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS. SOME OF THE INTELLIGENT ONES SAY THAT ITS ALL CRAP TO HAVE BANDH SO FREQUENTLY AND IF SO MANY BANDHS TAKE PLACE KOLKATA CAN ITSELF B BANDH FOREVER. THE USUAL COMMENT OF THR YOUNGSTERS ARE THAT BANDHS ARE REALLY COOL AS THEY ADD ANOTHER HOLIDAY TO THE CALENDER. WHAT DO YOU SAY?
